Upgrading JeSTeR

These instructions are only for customers running a version of JeSTeR that upon startup shows you a splash screen before showing the initial login screen. If you do not have such a version your upgrade instructions are found at the bottom of the document.

The latest version of JeSTeR can be found under the download section of the website (www.jestertool.com) using your download/registration code.

You need to perform these steps on the machine serving as the Server for your installation (has the Firebird Database Server installed and the JeSTeR Server software installed).

A backup of the database should be made before proceeding.   This just required you to copy the database (default location C:\FBDB\JESTER.FDB) and pasting it in the same directory.  This will create a file 'Copy of JeSTeR.FDB' which can be renamed to a more meaningful name such as  'JeSTeR Backup XX-XX-XXXX.FDB'.

  1. Download the latest version of JeSTeR.
  2. Stop any instance of JeSTeR running and make sure that JeSTeR Server is not running in the System Tray.  Make sure all the other computers in the installation are closed out of JeSTeR as well, they will receive errors if attempting to access JeSTeR during the upgrade process.
  3. Uninstall the old version of JeSTeR using Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Install the new version downloaded from the website with the following options
    1. Select the "Custom Installation" option; middle option between Workstation and Server
    2. Make sure that the Workstation and Server are set to be installed to the hardrive while the database and Firebird server are not set to be installed.
  5. Once you've proceeded through the installation and successfully licensed the installation start the JeSTeR Server found in the Programs Menu.
  6. It will initially start minimized to the System Tray so double-click on the small JeSTeR icon in the System Tray.  (note: it may be hidden if your computer hides inactive icons in the System Tray).
  7. Select Upgrade from the File menu.
  8. Follow instructions given which include stopping/restarting the Firebird Database (the Firebird Manager is found on the Control Panel).
  9. Upgrades are applied one at a time so after a successful upgrade keep selecting the Upgrade until it says your database is up-to-date.
  10. Finally, open JeSTeR and run a QB Sync. (it might appear all your Jobs are gone until after this step)
All of your other client machines will be updated the next time they login to JeSTeR.

If you do not have a version of JeSTeR with the splash screen your upgrade path is as follows:
  1. If you do not have a download/registration code, contact support@jestertool.com with your company name to receive your code.
  2. Follow the steps given above (1-10) making sure to backup the database before hand (see instructions above).
  3. Place the installation files either on a shared network drive, a CD, or a thumbdrive for portability between machines.
  4. On each machine in the installation uninstall the old version of JeSTeR and reinstall using the new installer and registration code.
    1. On each machine you will probably get a "Database does not exist error" on JeSTeR startup.  Goto 'Setup Options' and ensure that the ServerIP and Database Path are pointing to the Installations Server machine.
